As a community action agency and advocate for people experiencing poverty, the Social Development Commission (SDC) is pleased that a jury rendered a guilty verdict in the Derick Chauvin trial. We hope that it gives a little more peace to George Floyd’s family.

However, this is not enough.

There is more work to do.

Yet, this verdict shows what is possible.

It affirms that a police officer can and must be held accountable when there is abuse of citizens and a violation of constitutional rights.

It affirms that citizens will no longer remain silent allowing their communities to be marginalized and unable to speak to power.

No longer will we, Americans of all backgrounds, be divided in our pursuit of justice.

SDC commends the guilty verdict in the Derick Chauvin case. We are satisfied to see him held accountable for the murder of George Floyd. It was a senseless act of violence that forever changed our country.

SDC is committed to continue to work with the community as we dismantle systemic racism on all fronts and protect the dignity of human life.
