Shae Williams Poverty Warrior Spotlight

Meet the Social Development Commission (SDC)’s Insurance Navigator Shae Williams:

How long have you worked at SDC?
I have been with SDC for seven years.

What do you do at SDC? Tell us how it helps in the war against poverty.
I help seniors increase their income and get money put back into their social security check if they meet the income guidelines. I also provide assistance with BadgerCare and FoodShare enrollment and renewals. I also do the Marketplace (Insurance). People can come in and sign up for any of these programs with me for free!

What motivates you? Why do you do this work?
I have always liked helping people, especially the elderly. I like to see people succeed in whatever their needs are.

Describe a time when you felt like your work at SDC made a difference in someone’s life.
I had a senior come in last week. She was applying for Food Share. Well, in our conversation, I was also able to help her with the Medicare Savings Program (getting money back in her social security check).

I also helped her get an appointment with Community Advocates for energy assistance. I also helped her with her taxes. She is now waiting to get her Homestead filing done. She said, “I am so glad I reached out to you and I will be telling others!”

Tell us something people don’t know about you.
I like to bake and I also like to plan parties and cook.
