VITA Tax Program

Overview

For 16 years, the Social Development Commission (SDC) has operated the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA has provided FREE income tax preparation and filing to tens of thousands of low-to-mid income households. This is made possible through the generous financial and in-kind support of businesses and individuals in our community. To date, more than $193.5 million to low-to-moderate income families and nearly 188,000 state and federal tax returns have bee filed. Dollars received by taxpayers have had a tremendous impact on the local economy.

VITA is more than just FREE tax preparation. The program links interested customers to financial institutions at SDC “Super Site” locations. Banks provide information on the benefits of checking and savings accounts and open accounts on the spot. They also provide consultation on how to access tools that can help in realizing the dream of home ownership, opening a business, and other valuable tools. In addition, taxpayers have access to certified SDC staff that determine qualification for some public health benefits, and offer assistance completing and processing applications.

The efforts of SDC rely on assistance from over 100 IRS Certified Volunteers and community partners of the agency. This includes direct financial support as well as in-kind donation of time, expertise, and supplies. Contributions are critical to the programs success and helping families achieve financial independence to move out of poverty.

If you are interested in making a financial donation or being a volunteer, SDC and the thousands of customers that depend on the VITA program would be appreciative of your generosity.

SDC is the lead agency for the Milwaukee Asset Building Corporation (MABC), a major asset development initiative. Through the partnership on its FREE tax assistance program, VITA has provided customers maximum returns, and provided resources for money management and asset development strategies through asset accumulation and maintenance.

SDC does not discriminate in its programs, activities, facilities, employment, or educational opportunities on the basis of a
person’s sex, race, age, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, or disability.
