Over 200 youth, parents and schools collaborated virtually and in person at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee during the Social Development Commission (SDC)’s 2022 Youth Empowerment Summit on Friday, March 25, 2022.

Attendees from Brown Deer High School, Milwaukee Public Schools, School District of New Berlin and even Houston Independent School District in Texas came together to receive the tools to improve themselves and their community.

Workshops and discussions focused on the Summit’s theme of Repairing the Cracks in our Community’s Foundation, teaching youth that they are the future and have the power to overcome the disparities in our community. Workshops were presented by True Skool, Brooks Griffin from the INSPIRED Network, SDC’s Youth Advisory Board, and SDC Youth Services.

Morning keynote speaker Jamaal Smith with the City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention presented on the impact that disparities can have on youth and the steps youth can take to move beyond those disparities. Afternoon keynote speaker La’Ketta Caldwell of the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee shared her childhood experiences during her presentation to inspire youth to be self-aware and push through obstacles.

Parents and teachers were engaged with workshops that discussed how to have important conversations around suicide, mental health, drugs and alcohol.

The 2022 Youth Empowerment Summit was organized by SDC’s Youth Services and Youth Advisory Board.

“An important part of being a teenager is socialization. When COVID hit, that took away a lot of opportunities for people and I saw a part of myself leave me,” said SDC Youth Advisory Board Member Lillianna Valenzuela. “We need to do more things like this where [youth] can feel supported in their community.”
