Mourns the Death of Commissioner George Matthews 

It is with a heavy heart that SDC’s Board of Commissioners and Chief Executive Officer announce the death of Commissioner George Matthews. Commissioner Matthews died Wednesday, April 21st from COVID-19 related complications. Commissioner Matthews represented Milwaukee County residents living in SDC’s District 2. As a commissioner, Matthews was a liaison between SDC and the Sherman Park community where he lived. Matthews worked tirelessly on behalf of residents and SDC to address poverty in the community.

“Commissioner Matthews loved the community,” said CEO George Hinton. “I first met Commissioner Matthews in college. Even then you could see his commitment to others as he worked on behalf of students and veterans.”

Matthews was a United States Army veteran and also worked in the Milwaukee Public School system. He was dedicated to the community and served with pride and passion. Commissioner Matthews was respected, trusted, and understood the needs of the constituents he served.

Commissioner George Matthews will be deeply missed.
