Commissioner Vang Employee Spotlight Photo

Meet the Social Development Commission (SDC)’s Commissioner Dr. Chia Youyee Vang:

How long have you worked at SDC?
I’ve been an SDC commissioner since July 2020.

What do you do at SDC?
I am UW-Milwaukee’s representative on the SDC Board.

Tell us how it helps in the war against poverty.
SDC plays a critical role in empowering and lifting community members who are in need.

What motivates you? Why do you do this work?
We are all interdependent. There will be times when we’ll need others to help us so when I can contribute, I do so.

Describe a time when you felt like your work at SDC made a difference in someone’s life.
I’m newer on the board and I’ve mostly interacted with staff and fellow commissioners virtually because of the pandemic. As a result, I feel like I haven’t contributed much, but I look forward to opportunities to do so.

Tell us something people don’t know about you.
I enjoy traveling by myself. There’s something about anonymity that’s quite powerful.
