Meet the Social Development Commission (SDC)’s Prevention Specialist Lorinda Volzer:

How long have you worked at SDC?
I have been with SDC since October 2021.

What do you do at SDC?
I’m the Prevention Specialist at the SDC. I do substance misuse and mental health issue prevention work in the community, especially with youth.

What motivates you? Why do you do this work?
Coming from a largely poor and undereducated community, I saw a lot of people struggle to get by without enough community resources available to them. This motivated me to use my experiences, privileges, and platforms to get out and put in the work to help people help themselves. I’m passionate about the intersection of public health and social justice, so working for the SDC gives me an opportunity to be an agent of change in the community. It is so impactful to me that I get to be the mentor in youths’ lives that I wish I had at their age.

Describe a time when you felt like your work at SDC made a difference in someone’s life.
I feel like I have made a difference in someone’s life every time I get to work with our Youth Advisory Board. I love building connections with our teens and seeing them develop as individuals and leaders! Plus – they never fail to make me laugh.

Tell us something people don’t know about you
I am ridiculously good at Tetris.
