Meet the Social Development Commission (SDC)’s Youth and Family Services Community Health Educator Gabi Pazos-Baumann:

How long have you worked at SDC?
I have worked at SDC since November of 2021.

What do you do at SDC?
I am a Community Health Educator.

What motivates you? Why do you do this work?
I was previously employed as a K4 teacher in Milwaukee. During the pandemic, I saw the increased need for community services to families and decided to go back to school for a social work degree in order to make a change in the community I served.

Describe a time when you felt like your work at SDC made a difference in someone’s life.
I feel this almost everyday that I get to go speak with community members! I recently spoke to a woman experiencing homelessness who had gone through a few traumatic losses in the past year and felt as if she had “slipped through the cracks.” I was able to talk to her about the Milwaukee Emergency Rent Assistance (MERA) program as well as career services to help her regain control of her life.

Tell us something people don’t know about you
I am a very proud and open member as well as advocate for the queer community  in Milwaukee. I have attended countless meetings, festivals, and volunteered with a number of organizations to provide resources to the LGBTQ community here in Milwaukee. I consider myself a fierce advocate for queer folks in the workplace, higher education, and anywhere I can be. This also fuels my drive to want to reach our community with SDC.
