FREE Seminars for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

The Social Development Commission (SDC) has partnered with the southeastern Wisconsin chapter of SCORE to provide FREE seminars for budding entrepreneurs on how to start a business and develop effective business plans. Volunteer Opportunities for VITA!

(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

Become a volunteer for the Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program for the coming tax year. You will help residents maximize their tax returns by avoiding refund anticipation loans. As a volunteer, you will: receive free training and accredidation; help people begin to build financial assets; and be part of a program that helps thousands of households every year.

File Your 2014 Taxes for Free by October 15, 2015

If your Earned Household Income was $60,000 or less in 2014 you can use MyFreeTaxes Partnership provides free state and federal tax preparation and filing assistance for qualified individuals. Sponsored by the Walmart Foundation — in cooperation with Goodwill Industries InternationalNational Disability Institute, and United Way — the MyFreeTaxes Partnership’s online tax preparation and filing services have helped millions of families. Tax filing software is provided through MyFreeTaxes.com and powered by H&R Block.

Attention FoodShare Recipients:

Don't Lose Your Benefits!

If you an Able Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWDs), between the ages of 18-49, you may be at risk of losing your FoodShare benefits. New eligibility rules went into effect April 1. If you do not qualify for an exemption, you must participate in the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program. When you apply for or renew your FoodShare benefits you will have to meet a work requirement. if you do not meet the FSET work requirement for 3 months (consecutive or nonconsecutive) during a 36-month period, you may lose your FoodShare for the rest of the 36 months. Please call Milwaukee Enrollment Services at 888.947.6583, read and respond to any mailing/calls from ResCare (414.270-1800) or contact Hunger Task Force at 414.777.0483 immediately!

Yoga for Anger Management

If you are between the ages 14-18 and have anger management issues, we invite you to learn to manage your anger through Yoga. It will improve mood and health. If needed, you can receive community service hours for taking part. This is a six-session series:

October 15:  Anger Defined and Indentifying What Sets You Off

October 22: Mindfulness and Relaxation

October 29:  Anger, Family and Relationships (Part I)

November 5:  Anger, Family and Relationships (Part II)

November 12:  Your Ideal Self and Developing a Plan to Get There

November 19:  Letting Go, Review and Closing

Howard Avenue, Milwaukee) from 9:00am – 1:00pm. There’ll be entertainment, a fashion show, medical, insurance, music, health screening, housing information and much more!
