Brief Overview of Event
The 4th Annual Black Knowledge Bowl (BKB4) is an academic challenge offering high school aged students with a unique opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of African American History, compete for team prizes, engage in cultural enrichment activities, and build their self-confidence. This years event is focused exclusively on High School aged teams of 3-5 players. Teams are required to have a teacher or adult leader complete and submit the registration from and fee. Once your team is registered, you will receive a confirmation packet, schedule for the day, competition rules and a study guide.
Purpose of Event
To engage Greater Milwaukee youth in an academic competition in subject area of accomplishments African Americans so that they may be inspired and feed their minds of the rich history of their ancestors and the ancestors of their friends. The BKB4 also gives young people in Milwaukee the chance to grow intellectually, help their schools win prizes (should they win the competition), and bring about positive change in our community. It’s a grass roots effort to offset the problems that get so much coverage every day, from low achievement scores to dropout rates.
Description of Game
Questions used for the BKB4 originate from the Social Development Commission’s very own Black history game called Sankofa Story®, which translates to “go back and benefit”. The game covers a wide range of topics including Discovery & Industry, Education & Government, Leaders & Educators, Civil Rights & Law, Literature, the Performing Arts & Music, Milwaukee Black History, and Africa.

The game contains 10 categories (+Milwaukee), 50 questions per category (500 questions total).
It includes:
Ø 500 game cards (question on front/answer on back)
Ø A Fact Book (50 quick facts per category)
A study guide (3-4 exercises per category such as fill in the blank, true/false, who am I, matching, crossword puzzle, word find and multiple choice)
Expected Outcome of Event
The students who participate learn how important it is to study and experience positive peer competition. The latter translates into better relationships, an understanding of diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, and the importance of tolerance and respect for others. In addition, they gain a broader knowledge and understanding range of contributions African Americans contributed to the history of our country.
