History
SDC Youth Food Program contributes to the growth and development of children by helping to satisfy their basic nutritional needs. SDC Youth Food Program began serving nutritious, free hot lunches and suppers to needy children in 1970. An average of 300 meals were prepared daily to serve five locations in Milwaukee's central city. As the number of hungry children increased, so have the locations and the volume amount of food served. In the year 2007-2008, the SDC Youth Food Program served 118 sites, provided 1.9 million meals and served over 7,120 children ages infant through 12 years.

The Summer Food Service Program sponsored 54 sites in 2007, served over 81,000 meals and roughly 8,000 children participated in the program. We serve cold bag lunches to children ages 1 year through 18 years during the summer in Milwaukee County.

How the Youth Food Program Operates
During the school year, hot and cold meals are served daily at day care centers, tutorial programs and after-school recreation centers. Children, birth to 12 years, must be enrolled in these programs to participate.
General guidelines for participation:
•    After-school centers must be non-profit and County Certified or State Licensed.
•    Day care centers may be profit or non-profit.
Food Service Monitors visit sites to ensure that the centers adhere to program rules and regulations.
