Program Description
The Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition (MABC) is a private/public partnership that through education, planning, and income, assists low-income Milwaukee County residents achieve financial independence.
The Social Development Commission (SDC) is the lead agency for the MABC. The Coalition focuses on three facets: education/awareness, free tax filing services, and asset development and outcome evaluation. The free tax filing service promotes the earned income tax credit, child tax credits and other state and federal tax credits. The asset development links individuals filing taxes to education about the banking system and the process of obtaining savings and checking accounts, financial literacy on individual money management and asset development programs surrounding asset accumulation and maintenance.
The VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) program is designed as one strategy in an array of community-wide efforts to move area residents out of poverty. VITA sites are located throughout the Milwaukee County to prepare low-income resident’s taxes and file them electronically for free.
The household income limit for free tax preparation is $56,000.

Q. I need to make a change to my return, what do I need to do?
A. If you need to make a change or correct a return you filed electronically, you should send a Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to Internal Revenue Service Kansas City, MO 64999.
Q. What happens after I file my return electronically?
A. The IRS will notify the site where you had your return electronically filed when they accept your return, usually within 48 hours. If your return wasn’t accepted, the IRS will notify the site where you had your return electronically filed of the reasons for rejection.
You can also call the IRS toll-free Tele-Tax return information number at 1-800-829-4477 to check the status of your refund. You will need to know the first social security number shown on your return, your filing status and the exact amount of the refund you expect.
Tele-Tax should give you the date for mailing or depositing your refund. You should receive your refund check within 30 days of the date given by the Tele-Tax or within one week of the date given if you chose direct deposit. If you don’t receive your refund by then, or if Tele-Tax does not provide refund information, please call the IRS office at 1-800-829-1040.
Q. Where are my state refund and/or my Homestead refund?
A. If it has been more than three weeks since the Wisconsin Department of Revenue accepted your return and you have not received your refund, please call the state’s inquiry system at 414-227-4907 to check the status of your refund. You will need to know the first social security number shown on your return and the exact amount of the refund you expect.

You should receive your refund check within 30 days of the date given by the inquiry system or within one week of the date given if you chose direct deposit.
