The Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition (MABC) is a private/public partnership that assists low-income Milwaukee County residents achieve financial independence through education, planning and income development. The Social Development Commission is the lead agency for MABC.
MABC focuses on three facets: • Education/awareness • Free tax filing services • Asset development and outcome evaluation
The asset development links individuals filing taxes to education about the banking system and the process of obtaining savings and checking accounts, financial literacy on individual money management and asset development programs surrounding asset accumulation and maintenance.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - en Español The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is designed as one strategy of community-wide efforts to move area residents out of poverty. VITA sites are located throughout Milwaukee County to prepare low-income residents' taxes and file them electronically for free.
Four "Super Sites" were created as one-stop centers in targeted locations. The Super Sites address the challenges of local poverty in new and fresh ways. One of the Super Sites is a mobile site that changes locations in order to maximize the accessibility of services, resources and information.
At the Super Sites, the city of Milwaukee Health Department identifies eligible individuals and families who are without health insurance, assess and qualify their needs and assist in the completion of the application process. Financial institutions are on site to give taxpayers the opportunity to open bank accounts and provide information about homeownership and other asset building opportunities. Ways to Work Program Ways to Work is a family loan program that has partnered with SDC to help low-income families with their transportation needs by offering small loans. Loans must be used for either a vehicle purchase or the repair(s) of a vehicle already owned. For more information on Ways to Work click here.
Partners The Asset Development efforts of SDC rely on assistance from partners of the agency. This support includes direct support as well as in-kind donations of time and expertise. Their support is critical to the program's efforts to assist families achieve financial independence.
