SDC Head Start is a community action program that provides comprehensive early childhood education to low-income children and involves their parents in the total child development process.

Who are we?

For more than 44 years, the Social Development Commission (SDC) has provided comprehensive early childhood education to children of low-income families. Parents are empowered to be involved in the complete child development process helping their children to learn, grow, and discover their own talents. Head Start is the name of the educational program offered through the SDC.

What is Head Start?

* A free child and family development program.
* A half-day and full-day learning program to advance children’s education and prepare them for kindergarten.
* Parent support and self-development resources.

Who is eligible for Head Start?

* Children ages 3-5.
* Families who meet federal income guidelines (see guidelines below).
* Children with disabilities are a priority for enrollment.

What does Head Start offer?

* Individual educational experiences.
* A daily breakfast/snack and lunch.
* Referrals for health and dental screening.
* Family support services.
* Volunteer opportunities.

When do Head Start classes operate?

Head Start operates from September to June, and opportunities for year-round sessions are available at various locations. Our services are for the entire family, children with disabilities, and at various locations, transportation is also offered. Class sessions include: Half-day and Full-day, four or five times a week.

How much does it cost?

Head Start children’s education is free!

Upon enrollment you will need to bring documentation of:
Child’s age; household income; Health Card and information regarding dental, immunizations, and physical screenings.

How to apply for Head Start?

* Your child should be 3 years of age.
* Check to see if you meet the federal income guidelines below.

* Find the corresponding phone number and call that center closest to you to set up an application appointment.

The definition of “family” to be used in determining eligibility is found in 45 CFR 1305.2(e), which defines family as all persons living in the same household who are:

* Supported by the income of the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the child enrolling or participating in the program, and
* related to the parents(s) or guardian(s) by blood, marriage or adoption.

The period of time to be considered for eligibility is the twelve months immediately preceding the month in which application or re-application for enrollment of a child in a Head Start program is made, or for the calendar year immediately preceding the calendar year in which the application or re-application is made, whichever more accurately reflects the family’s current needs.
