Learn more about Community Education
The SDC Community Education Program started in 2006 as a response to the 2006-2010 Strategic Plan. It was created to develop an entrepreneurial project that would complement the agency’s mission and objectives. It was expanded in 2007 and renamed the Community Education and Entrepreneurial Development Program to reflect the inclusion cultural products developed. These cultural products include SDC CEO Deborah Blanks’ diversity and inclusion educational workbook “Weaving Diversity into the Fabric of America” and the Black History educational game “Sankofa Story”. SDC later produced a video and music disk set “Believin the Power of You” designed to highlight SDC’s services. This video not only showcases services provided throughout Milwaukee County it also features musicians and community members from Milwaukee. SDC continues to find new and innovative ways to use Community Education workshops and products to educate and entertain the community on cultural diversity and inclusion. The Community Education products “Weaving Diversity into the Fabric of America” and “Sankofa Story” are available for purchase under the products page.
In 2009, SDC began implementation of workshops and activities using the new product “Sankofa Story” to educate the community’s youth through the Black Knowledge Bowl. The Community Education Program goal is to positively affect change in individuals, schools, and communities by encouraging diversity and an attitude of inclusion and equity. Community Education Program is integrated into existing SDC programs or with stand alone programs. The distribution of products is envisioned at the same time to help SDC generate fund support for additional cultural products as well as programmatic financial support. The Community Education Program continues to build and enhance collaborations throughout the community. Past and present partnerships include ones with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Public Schools, Manpower Corporation, the City of Milwaukee, and Wisconsin’s W-2 Program.
The products from the SDC Community Education Program will raise knowledge among students and adults about’ contributions to the development of America, increase confidence among youth to play an integral role in shaping the future of our country, and improve cultural understanding.
