Basic Skills and Adult Education

Program Description
The SDC's GED/HSED Preparation Program provides instruction to help individuals complete a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) or HSED (High School Equivalency Diploma).  By earning these secondary education credentials, clients are likely to find higher paying employment or go on to further their education.  This program is conducted in collaboration with the local district of the State technical college system.

The SDC's Competency-Based Diploma Program provides an alternative method of earning a high school equivalency diploma HSED for adults with special learning needs.  This unique program is conducted with special approval from the State Department of Public Instruction.

The SDC's GED/HSED Testing Program is provided onsite to assist individuals who are moving into postsecondary education or who need secondary education credentials for job readiness.  This program is conducted under a special license from the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education.

The introductory financial literacy curriculum taught at the SDC is Money Smart.  The course assists participants in understanding financial information, obligations, and introductory level financial planning. Get Checkingis also offered on site for participants with difficulties opening a traditional checking account.

The Resource Center provides curriculum-based computer instruction and qualified instructional staff for job searching and career planning.

Any person 18 years or older with a reading level at 3rd grade or higher

Q.  How much does it cost?

A.  All education courses and GED tests for SDC participants are covered by scholarship.  The cost of GET CHECKING is $40.00 with some scholarships available.

Q.  How long does it take?

A.  Completion of the program depends on participants’ skills at entry, attendance, and motivation.

Q.  Do I have to come to class?

A.  Some classes have mandatory attendance.

Q.  Do you have child care?

A.  Our department doesn’t have child care, but we help find child care for qualified participants.

Q.  Can you help me find a job?

A.  We are not a job placement department, but we help you create a resume, cover letter and provide job searching assistance throughout the semester.
