Community Forums (NEW!)
6 of SDC's 18 Commissioners are elected officials that represent Milwaukee County's low-income residents. Each elected Commissioner represents a unique district of Milwaukee County that has a proportional number of low-income individuals. Beginning in the fall of 2011, SDC's elected Commissioners will be hosting community forums in their districts. These forums will have two goals: (1) inform the community about poverty in their community (including indicators, trends, best practices, current initiatives, etc.) and (2) solicit information from the public about poverty (community needs, observations, ideas for reducing poverty, etc. Past forums have been held at Holy Redeemer Church, the John C Cudahy YMCA, Urban Day School, and Northcott Neighborhood House. Check back soon for new forum dates!
Public Hearings
Public hearings are held by industry regulations of the SDC pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes Section 66.O125(3)(c)4. SDC uses all testimony to analyze issues, recommend solutions, develop policy, promote public education, and create response strategies. To review transcripts from previous public hearings, please visit our Archived Publications Page.
The SDC Board of Commissioners has made the holding of public hearings an agency priority. As such, the Intergovernmental Affairs & Research Division will be hosting additional public hearings on a variety of topics. Please check back here for additional information on these events.
Symposiums
Seeking to enhance our understanding of poverty in Metro Milwaukee, SDC hosts annual Symposiums on Poverty. These events pull together representatives from diverse sectors for robust discussions and meaningful education on poverty related issues. Symposiums educate, motivate, and create opportunities for action for a wide audience on issues directly affecting low-income residents in Milwaukee County.
The most recent Symposium was held on November 9, 2011 with the theme "Reducing Poverty in a Changing Landscape." While the final report is currently in the works, feel free to check out some of our blog posts regarding the subject matter: http://www.cr-sdc.org/About/SDCBlog.htm
Check back soon for a complete report on the Symposium, which will include a guide for community members interested in how poverty reduction can occur in our current economic environment!
